EMU farming

Business of raising EMU birds for two main purposes:

  1. The first purpose is Breeding Birds - EMUs are easy to farm and give high potential profit by selling young and adult EMU’s birds across the world.

  2. The second purpose is to Slaughter Birds – EMUs are slaughtered to get various beneficial products like EMU meat, EMU oil, EMU bone, EMU feathers, EMU skin, EMU nail.

                1. The EMU ranch's secondary market is the EMU slaughter market, whose main products consist of EMU meat, which is always ready for sale to restaurants, residential orders, worldwide markets and in the coming years it will be exported to supermarkets.
                2. High quality leather produced from the EMU skin, and EMU oil with medical properties, is currently being used in the health and beauty industry is also distributed in the market.
                3. EMU oil is widely used for therapeutic rubbing oil, skin and facial moisturizing lotions and is also beneficial for treating the burn skin, and pain relieving joints.
                4. Considering the ever growing population in India we must think about the future requirement of proteins;
                5. Verily EMU will be our food for future! EMU flesh is pulpy and has 98% fatty portion with low cholesterol and high percentage of iron in it. The oil extracted from EMU fat has medicinal value;
                6. The softness of Emu skin makes it able to take up any color and hence can be decorated with a variety of colors. Emu skin business can bring handsome profit in both domestic and international market.

The importance of EMU business exists in the availability of rich proteins for the people and the potential sales for the oil and the skin obtained from the bird.

There are many reasons as to why one should do EMU farming. In the first place this is a very fast growing business globally and now in India with a very high percentage of profit on investment.

EMU can survive in any type of climate. It is easy to look after because of non aggressive nature. The special structures for stay and large chunk of land are not required for the birds. Nearly 100 to 150 birds can be easily accommodated in one acre of land.

Being an eco friendly and highly effective, EMU farming is more profitable business to conventional agriculture.

As far as Indian environment is concerned, there is highly living-friendly atmosphere in the country for this business. The main work of laborers in EMU farm is to give proper food and water to the birds and to collect their excreta.

Hence, the manual labor charges should be very less. Few men can easily look after an EMU farm with 100 birds in it. In the beginning of EMU farming, the eggs are used for hatching and reproduction of fleshy young-ones. A market with great profits has been established for EMU flesh, skin, fat, oil, and eggs.

How to make an EMU farm:

EMU birds live on infertile or bushy land and always lives in a group. Therefore, EMU farm must be on a non-agricultural or barren land which has the facility for water runoff easily. A single bird needs a minimum of 40 to 50 sq. ft. area and land should be open. A newly built EMU farm must have minimum of 20 bird pairs with both male & female. A grilled fence can give excellent protection; within the fenced area a structure of 20 x 40 feet may be erected to give the birds shelter from sun, wind and rain.

EMU eat grains, cereals, pulses, leafy vegetables and grass and lives in a natural environment from extreme cold to extreme hot. To increase the reproduction growth rate, feed intake of EMUs must be proper with energy concentration of the diet. Therefore, it is more suitable to relate the requirement for lysine and other amino acids to birds’ energy content. This is done by including the requirement for lysine as glysine per mega-joule of metabolisable energy and other essential amino acids as a proportion of the lysine level. These conventions must be adopted in the nutrient required for proper growing of EMUs.

Following are the suggested nutrient requirements of growing EMU’s, and these are available in the readymade food available for EMU’s in Indian market.

Metabolisable energy, Lysine, Methionine, Methionine + Cystine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Threonine, Calcium, Phosphorus and Sodium.

Various Security measures to be taken in Emu Farming:

  1. Farm should be located away from the population area.
  2. The Fencing of the farm should be proper with adequate breeding facilities.
  3. Appropriate disinfection procedures and foot dips etc. should be kept.
  4. The quarantine sheds should be kept away from other sheds.
  5. Regular disease monitoring procedures like postmortem examination of dead birds and checking the health of other birds is recommended.
  6. Mineral, bacterial, chemical and contamination bacterial concentrations in water should be checked.
  7. The other type of birds and pets should not be allowed to enter in the farm where EMUs are living or rearing.
  8. The brooding space should be optimum.
  9. There should be adequate space for showers, change over and dips.
  10. Proper storage of EMUs food should be made to prevent any kind of contamination.
  11. The water quality should be checked periodically and if it gets contaminated it should be treated immediately with any sanitizer.
  12. There should be facility for disposing or destroying the bedding or dead birds etc.
  13. The equipment should be proper, properly disinfected and separated.
  14. The farm should have a proper water sanitation system.
